How Magnesium can help your skin - from Blemishes to Anti-Ageing

by Cassie Sanghvi on Nov 11 2019
There is a lot of talk about how Magnesium can help your body - whether it be to manage pain, help muscle recovery, get a better nights sleep or ward off a headache. But Magnesium has another amazing function that we haven't delved into until now. Your skin. The largest organ in (on?!) your body actually responds incredibly well to topical Magnesium treatments. From managing acne to helping reduce the signs of ageing we cover off the how's and why's of using Magnesium as part of your skincare routine.  How to use The Base Collective range to support skin health.  Our Magnesium & White Tea Wash is gentle enough to use as a face wash and is also pH balanced so it won’t strip your skin of essential oils or encourage excess sebum production. It is also all natural and perfect for sensitive skin types.  Our Magnesium & Vitamin E cream can do double duty as a face cream and it is a lovely way to introduce Magnesium into your daily skincare regime. It is also very hydrating and perfect for sensitive skins.  Our Magnesium Oil is brilliant for managing pimples. Simply dab a little onto the area and let it work its magic. Don’t forget to apply your daily dose to your stomach as well to increase your Magnesium levels overall and help support your skin health holistically.   Read more below!   BLEMISHES Redness and inflammation     We all have heard the benefits of Magnesium for relaxation, but did you know it is also incredibly beneficial for relaxation (aka calming redness) of the skin - making it the perfect addition to those suffering from blemishes and generalised redness of the skin.  Our White Tea & Magnesium Wash is perfect for blemish prone skin as it has over 40% organic aloe vera as its base, and this combined with the benefits of magnesium work together to sooth redness, reduce inflamed skin and stop the skin producing excess oil and therefore works to get blemishes under control. Use it as a face and body wash knowing that it is 100% natural and organic with no added nasties.  Follow by using our Magnesium & Vitamin E Cream to help moisturise and restore blemish prone skin back to its natural balanced state. Believe it or not most people who have blemishes think they should be 'drying' their skin out, when in fact this in turn leads to the skin naturally producing excess oil to compensate and resulting in more blemishes! This cream is 100% natural and will help to restore the skin to its natural balanced state. Hot tip - dab our iconic Magnesium Oil directly onto any spots and watch them disappear the next day!   Helping to get a good nights sleep While essential for energy production, Magnesium is also critical in the body’s end of day wind-down process and getting a good nights sleep. And why is sleep important for acne? Because without sleep your stress levels increase (upping those cortisol levels again), inflammation can worsen (further aggravating your acne) and it can compromise your immune systems ability to help fight the bacteria linked to acne. Put simply – good sleep supports good skin.  Reducing Inflammation Magnesium has long been recognised for its anti-inflammatory properties and this makes it perfect for supporting skin health across a variety of conditions including acne.    W R I N K L E S  &  A N T I - A G E I N G  Helping Maintain Elasticity & Moisture When you are deficient in Magnesium (and upto 80% of the population are) this tends to results in lower levels of fatty acids on the skin. Without these fatty acids your skin will lose elasticity and moisture and create the perfect environment for dryness and lack of tone, which in turn equals wrinkles.  Try our Magnesium & White Tea for a luxurious balm to hydrate and promote collagen production naturally in the skin.   DNA Replication Magnesium is an essential for the enzymes that support DNA repair and replication. Without Magnesium, these processes can slow down and in turn speed up the signs of ageing.   Collagen Function Magnesium helps support the synthesis of collagen and a lack of collagen as we age is one of the key factors in wrinkles. Fighting Free Radicals Without adequate Magnesium, your skin is far more susceptible to harmful free radical damage that can ultimately lead to wrinkling and skin damage. This is because Magnesium is needed for the production of glutathione, which is a key antioxidant that fights free radicals and the damage they can cause.   R E D N E S S The Calming Effect Magnesium has been referred to as “the original chill pill” and that applies to our skin as much as for our body’s nervous system. It is an especially effective calming agent for suffers of redness and sensitive skin and transdermal Magnesium is recommended by skin therapists and dermatologists as delivering the most benefit to sufferers of these conditions.    So, really, why wouldn't you try it out? TBC xoxo

Treat yourself on Valentines Day - Our Picks to help you celebrate you!

by The Base Collective on Feb 11 2019
Valentines Day.... Forget waiting for someone else to give you something - Valentines Day is the perfect excuse to treat yourself. Here are our top 5 picks for making your Valentines Day super special for YOU. ('Cause you deserve it. You know you totally do.)   1. A personalised candle from Bow and Willow Because nothing says relax and enjoy like a warm (Magnesium?!) bath by candlelight. And nothing says 'don't use this it's mine' like putting your name on it. Plus these are hand poured, phthalate free and made from a renewable source and come in amazing fragrances.      2. New activewear from Nimble You know that it is way easier to get your body moving when you have new clothes to do it in. And Nimble Activewear uses material made from recycled plastic bottles in most of their leggings, which means you can feel good about your self while making yourself feel good!       3. A Healing Treatment We are incredibly lucky that our local is Willow Urban Retreat. The treatments here range from Deep Crystal Sound Healing as part of your facial to Hawaiian Massage to Infrared Saunas.  So whether it is a facial, massage or body scrub find a day spa nearby and book in 60 mins to pamper yourself and look after yourself.        4. Get your Muscles Moving Exercise can sometimes be seen as a punishment. Something we have to do so we can have that night out, or fit into that new dress (that we probably shouldn't have bought in the first place if that is how it makes us feel.)  But it really shouldn't be. So book into a new class  you haven't tried (we're pencilling in a session at Fluid Form Pilates next time we are Sydney side!) and have fun with it. Laugh when you can't touch your toes (guilty!) and take a sweaty post work out selfie to remind yourself that you survived - and maybe even had a little fun.      5. Chocolate. Because... Chocolate. We've been dying over the Hey Tiger Co flavours (hello Birthday Cake Crumb and Raspberry Fudge Brownie) so this would be our pick. They have dark, white and vegan so all bases are covered!  And when treating yourself like this is it totally healthy. (Even better - wear your new Nimble pants while consuming... you get points for "intention" and you'll be comfy!)

Bathroom Trends for 2017

by Cassandra Sanghvi on Mar 05 2017
If you’re as interior obsessed as we are, you’ll understand the excitement (and occasional stress) brought on when you consider redecorating your home. When it comes to designing living spaces, the bathroom is often left as an afterthought. However, being one of the most used rooms in the house, why not get a little creative? Whether you’re undergoing major renovations or looking for some simple tips to elevate your space, these top 10 bathroom trends for 2017 will leave you feeling inspired. Unique tilingBoring bathrooms are a thing of the past with this year’s focus on unique tile arrangements. Bathroom tiling in 2017 is all about small, geometric shapes to make a subtle statement. For added interest, we love the look of Mediterranean inspired patterns or mismatched shapes. Mix and match subway, hex and square tiles for a customised feel.Baths as a focal pointHow often do you have a bath? If your answer is ‘not enough’, then it may be time to update your tub. This year, making your bath the focal point in your bathroom means more motivation to relax and unwind. Ideal! Whether you prefer curved edges or a more sculptural shape, free standing baths are remaining bang on trend in 2017. Who said bath time is just for kids?Natural finishes and timber surfacesCouldn’t we all do with a day at the spa? This year bathroom styling is all about creating a home day spa experience with natural and organic finishes. Swap out harsh chrome finishings for natural, nude textures like oak, stone or timber. Floating vanitiesWith growing popularity in Europe, wall hanging vanities not only look clean and beautiful, they also allow for extra storage, which is always a good thing. Perfect for smaller bathrooms, floating vanities are a minimalistic way to save space while adding interest to your room.Statement sinksWhen it comes to picking a basin for your bathroom, why not make a sculptural statement? Natural granite basins are having a big comeback in 2017, along with basins made from other ‘softer’ materials including oak, sandstone and bamboo. Never enough plantsTo create a bathroom atmosphere that feels inviting, plants are an easy way to achieve this. Bringing the outdoors in with some greenery will breathe life into your space and add a pop of colour to neutral decor. We love succulents and tropical plants as they are easy to maintain and never go out of style!Oversized round mirrorsConsidered a bathroom necessity, in 2017 you’ll want to invest in a round mirror. The more oversized the better! Round mirrors are a modern alternative to their square counterparts and help to create the illusion of a much larger room.Bring back wallpaperYes, wallpaper in the bathroom is back! Now before you start cringing, this trend is one that can really elevate the feel of your space. Think of wallpaper as a piece of art that will become a bold feature in your bathroom. Go for something that will leave you feeling inspired as you get ready in the mornings and unwind at night.Throw rugsUsually reserved for the living room, throw rugs are a beautiful replacement for the boring bath mat. Invite some warmth into your bathroom by decorating it as you would any other area in your home. This year, Moroccan and vintage inspired throws will be all over your Instagram feeds, mark our words. Natural productsNow we may be a little biased, but the natural beauty movement is undeniably bigger than ever. Products that are safe, effective and derived from natural ingredients are a big trend for 2017 and one that’s here to stay. The Hand Wash - Lemon and The Hand Milk - Lemon are the perfect, simple duo. You’ll start with dirty hands and finish with clean, moisturised skin that smells great too. Friday Faves: Stuff for the Lil' Peeps

by Carly Pountney on Feb 17 2017
With 5 kidlets between us, we have been known to get mildly distracted by the ridiculously gorgeous offerings for kids these days on Instagram. Here are a few of our faves - but be warned. It is way too easy to click on through and partake in some serious retail therapy or day dreaming sessions with these accounts!! 1. Mister Fly Kids (@misterflykids) Mister Fly Kids completely satisfies our love of all things monochrome, simple and stylish. The neutral palette and cute but modern designs also make this a go-to for new arrival presents ... and maybe just a treat or two for ourselves!   2. Hubble and Duke (@hubbleandduke) Ok we'll be really honest. We both know 3 moth olds do not need shoes. They really don't - at most maybe a pair of socks. But how can you say no when you have a pair of metallic Mary-Janes staring at you from your mobile while you are up at 2 am feeding?    3. Jamie Kay (@jamiekaystore) Simple style and clean lines wins us over every time and this NZ brand is no exception. Plus a little bit of quirk (ver the knee cat socks anyone?!) can go a long way too!   4. A Cup of Chic (@acupofchic) Want a great selection of all the must have pieces (from a style point... not necessarily a practical point!)? A Cup of Chic has a gorgeous range of things you may not need, but you are going to want.    5. Bloomingville Mini (@bloomingville_mini) Focusing more on the interior side of life for your little peeps, Bloomingville Mini is pretty much how a childhood should look - at least on Instagram!
