How To Get Hydrated Skin

by The Base Collective on Feb 16 2021
Eat foods rich in water We already know drinking water is essential to overall health and well-being, but it’s not only drinks that can top up your hydration levels. Lots of fruit and vegetables are also a great source of water and malnutrition is a common cause of dull skin. Consider adding versatile foods such as cucumber, tomatoes, broccoli, apples and oranges to your everyday diet for an extra boost to improve your skin health.   Slip, slop, slap To keep your skin as hydrated as possible, it’s best to limit being in the sun as much as possible and as always, wear protective sunscreen all year round. Sun exposure evaporates hydration from your skin and even the shortest amount of time is enough to reduce the skin’s ability to retain moisture. This results in a breakdown of collagen and elastin, which shows those pesky signs of premature ageing such as pigmentation and wrinkles.   Use gentle skincare Slathering on the first face cleanser you find isn’t always the solution when you need a moisture hit. Many cleansers on the market are full of nasties that can strip your skin of its natural oil levels, so look for washes that are pH balanced to ensure your skin isn’t being reduced of any moisture. Bonus points for extra nourishing ingredients such as aloe vera and magnesium, which actually works to repair your skin’s barrier to prevent water loss and retain moisture.   Exfoliate often Moisture can’t penetrate the skin and skincare can't work effectively if dead skin cells are in the way. Pick up a non-toxic and gentle exfoliating product (we recommend a chemical-based exfoliating serum) and finish off with a nourishing cream for super-soft, super-moisturised skin. Make sure you follow the instructions carefully to know the frequency that works best for your skin type - sometimes more isn't always better.   Consider some (minor) lifestyle changes Did you know spending too long in the bath or shower can actually deplete your skin’s moisture? It may sound contradictory but bathing in water that’s too hot dehydrates all those necessary oils that are essential for keeping your skin hydrated, so keep it lukewarm. If you're prone to pumping the air conditioner in summer and the heater in winter, consider buying a humidifier to improve the moisture content in the room around you.

How To Get Rid Of Maskne

by The Base Collective on Feb 10 2021
With masks a part of the foreseeable future, it’s time to adapt your daily skincare routine to treat and prevent the dreaded maskne.  But before we get into our tips for maintaining healthy and happy skin, how does this problem actually develop? Acne occurs when your skin becomes clogged with oil and dead skin cells, which builds into those pesky pimples. When putting on a mask, you’re creating an environment where your hair follicles can’t ‘breathe’ properly, and therefore are more prone to clogging. Add the hot air and sweat that’s created by the mask against your skin, and it becomes the ideal place for acne-causing bacteria. Now that you better understand the problem, let’s take a look at how you can keep maskne at bay!   Wash, wash and wash If you’re wearing a reusable mask, you should already be keeping it as clean as you can with regular, everyday washing. This also keeps it extra hygienic for the skin as it removes oils and skin cells that can collect inside the mask. Use only gentle detergents and minimal fragrances to avoid skin irritation.   Chain it up Not only is a chain convenient (never lose your mask again!) it also helps reduce the number of germs and acne-causing bacteria spread by tossing your mask on a table or inside your purse. A quick fix If you’re wearing your mask on a hot day, a quick, occasional swipe with a gentle face wipe can go a long way toward removing the sweat and dirt build-up. Keep them in your purse or at the desk at work so you don't forget! Switch to non-toxic skincare A gentle cleanser can help remove excess oil, sweat, and bacteria. Avoid cleansers that contain alcohol or perfume as these ingredients can cause irritation and make it harder for your symptoms to heal. We recommend using a pH balanced wash with non-toxic ingredients for extra happy skin. Minimise makeup If possible, don’t wear makeup! It already prevents your skin from breathing, and beneath a mask it can significantly contribute to clogged pores. If necessary, turn to products labelled 'non-comedogenic' or mineral makeup.

How to wake up feeling energised

by The Base Collective on Jan 12 2021
Okay, we’re the first to admit that sometimes there’s nothing worse than waking up and having to drag yourself out of bed every morning. We fully envy those who can bound out of bed seemingly without a care in the world. But we’ve learnt that it doesn’t always come naturally to these people – they undertake practices in the evening before as well as the morning which puts some extra pep in their step. With the help of Tuck.com, we've put together a list of ways to wake up in the morning feeling the best version of yourself.   Tips and tricks to help you wake up feeling ready to take on the day: First, setting yourself up for quality sleep before bed will ensure that you’ve achieved an adequate amount of rest. We’ve already covered this in our eBook but let’s quickly recap: Establish a bedtime routine such as taking a bath or reading Reduce stress by stretching, practising yoga or writing down your worries Use the power of lavender to relax and unwind Reduce electronic use Keep your bedroom dark, quiet and cool   Also, this may be very obvious, but do you actually set enough time to sleep? Ensuring that you’re minimising your night-time activities to ensure you hit the hay at a reasonable hour will allow you to make sure you get between 7-8 hours of sleep each night.   Next, you need to find ways that work for you to boost alertness in the morning so you’re ready to take on the day. Try the following:   Open your curtains and let the sunshine in as soon as you wake to reinforce your circadian rhythms and give you an energy boost A morning workout will get your heart pumping while boosting your mood. Get some bonus points and train outside in the sun Turn off the snooze button! It makes it harder for you to wake up as the standard snooze time is too short for your sleep to be beneficial. Place your alarm clock on the other side of the room so you have to physically get up and turn it off. Have a glass of water as soon as you wake. It will hydrate and refresh you after the long hours spent asleep Why don’t you make waking up something to look forward to? Making a morning playlist, cook a delicious breakfast or do some yoga to inspire and give you confidence for the day ahead.   Personally, we're definitely going to try putting our alarm clock on the other side of the room and making a morning inspirational playlist - we're talking a lot of Fleetwood Mac. What will you try out?   Carly and Cass xx

Magnesium for skin rashes - everything you need to know

by The Base Collective on Dec 26 2020
Magnesium is involved in over 300 processes in our bodies, everything from muscle function to regulating your mood and blood glucose control. What a lot of people don't realise is that Magnesium is also involved in skin health.  With the skin being the largest organ of our body it makes sense that if you are lacking in this important mineral the condition and wellness of our skin will start to suffer - think everything from dryness, acne along with premature ageing. Given this mineral is involved in so many processes in our bodies it's easy to understand why the skin may be the last organ to get its fair share of Magnesium from the food and supplements you take. The International Journal of Dermatology published an article showing that 'bathing in a magnesium rich Dead Sea salt solution improves skin barrier function, enhances skin hydration, and reduces inflammation in atopic dry skin'.  Whilst bathing in our pure Magnesium Chloride flakes from the Dead Sea for 20 minutes is the ultimate way to feed your skin Magnesium this is not always possible in our day to day busy lives. Not to worry,  incorporating our Magnesium Skincare into your daily routine is an easy way to feed your skin the mineral it needs to function at its best. Hello strong healthy skin! Our award winning Magnesium & White Tea wash combines the power of Magnesium from the Dead Sea with gentle and nourishing ingredients such as Aloe Vera Juice, Sunflower Oil and White Tea extract which is proving to be a saviour for many with dry, red, itchy and irritated skin to use easily on a daily basis.   Not all Magnesium products are created equal! It's important to read the ingredients labels and choose products for your skin that don't contain known irritants such as phenoxyethanol, SLS, parabens or mineral oils that will clog the pores. Please know we are proud to manufacturer with these known irritants and are proudly Australian made and owned, dairy free and vegan friendly.

About the Artist

by The Base Collective on Nov 18 2020
This year, our spectacular Christmas packaging has been designed exclusively for us by the very talented local artist Kerry Evitts. This vibrant piece is included in Kerry's 2020 collection, which is inspired by the resilience and community spirit shown during the COVID-19 pandemic.    Kerry is a British-born Melbourne-based painter, designer, Psychotherapist and mother who absolutely loves to fill the world with colour.   “My work is often described as ‘bright, bold and striking’,” she said. “They’re hugely inspired by the subconscious mind, nature, colour and the environment around us.   “My paintings express positivity, symbolising the power of the mind in choosing a positive outlook.”   Like everyone, Kerry was greatly impacted by the events of 2020. Challenges came thick and fast, firstly with the Australian bushfires and then of course, the COVID-19 pandemic. She found herself navigating the sudden and dramatic changes in how she lived, being in isolation, home-schooling her children and striving to stay hopeful during these times.    “I pulled on my art which has been the guided force of my hope and optimism, and I created my newest collection aptly named ‘2020’ which aims to spread a message of joy, hope and community,” Kerry said.   Drawing on the community is important to us - like our products and Kerry’s work, the gift boxes are made right here in Melbourne and we are excited to announce they are fully recyclable.

The Ultimate Cherry Ripe Recipe

by The Base Collective on May 15 2020
If you do anything today, make. this. Cherry. Ripe. slice. Tried and tested (multiple times, just to be sure) by us, it's absolutely delicious. It's quick, easy and uncomplicated too - the only suggestion is to cut back slightly on the coconut oil and rice malt syrup as it can become quite rich with the chocolate layers. Enjoy!   Servings: Approximately 16 slices Prep time: 30 minutes  Chill time: 30 minutes   2 cups of desiccated coconut 3 Tbsp pure maple or rice syrup 3 Tbsp coconut oil, gently melted 1 cup freeze dried cherries 3/4 cup freeze dried raspberries pinch of himalayan pink salt 300g dark chocolate (62% or 70%, dairy free)   Line a small brownie tin (e.g. 18cm x 30cm or 20cm x 20cm) with baking paper. If you’re using store-bought chocolate, melt by placing in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of boiling water. Ensure the bowl doesn’t touch the water to avoid overheating the chocolate. Line a small brownie tin (e.g. 18cm x 30cm or 20cm x 20cm) with baking paper. If you’re using store bought chocolate, melt by placing in a heat proof bowl set over a pan of boiling water. Ensure the bowl doesn’t touch the water to avoid overheating the chocolate. Gently melt the coconut oil by placing in a heat proof bowl set over a pan of steaming water with the heat turned off (you could use the same pan of water as the chocolate, just switch bowls the bowls over as needed). Place the remaining ingredients into a food processor and blend until well combined. The mixture should be slightly sticky and hold together when pressed. Spread one third of the melted chocolate over the bottom of the lined tin and place in the fridge or freezer to set for 5 to 10 minutes. When the chocolate layer is just firm to touch, remove from the tin from the fridge or freezer and spread the cherry mixture over evenly, pressing it down well. This ensures the bars will hold together when cut. Pour the remaining chocolate on top and spread evenly with a spoon or palate knife, then create a decorative ripple effect. Return the slice to the fridge to set for approximately 20 minutes. When the chocolate is just firm, remove from the fridge and slice into bars using a hot, dry knife (i.e. dip the knife into steaming hot water and then dry it off before cutting the slice). Store the chocolate cherry ripe slice in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, or in the freezer for 1 month.   Click here to view the recipe in full!

1. Ceramic Mug Warmer Don't you hate it when you hop into bed to watch Netflix and forget about your steaming cup of tea, but then can't be bothered to go back to the kitchen and make another one? Yeah, same. Well, this Ceramic Mug Warmer is here to help. You can set the desired temperature for your cuppa, control it with your smartphone for notifications and customise presets, and even has an LED light to indicate when it's ready. Literally - what more could you want?     2. Pregnancy Support Pillow Okay bear with us here.... you don't actually even have to be pregnant to use this pillow. Not only does it look super comfortable and supportive for your back, hips, knees, neck, and belly, but reviews also suggest it can help relieve tension and discomfort. It even has a detachable pillow that you can arrange as needed. And honestly, it just looks really, really comforting.   3. Bamboo Laptop Desk For those 'working from home' (or for those who just want to pop their glass of wine somewhere more convenient), why not work from bed using this multifunctional desk? You can use your laptop, eat dinner, colour in, read, basically anything you can think of! It has a groove to rest your coffee (or wine) and a small drawer for storing your pen, note pad or phone. It even has a hollowed-out design so that your laptop doesn't overheat. Genius!   4. Tablift Tablet Stand And for those who are just embracing life in bed... we've got a game-changer if you have a tablet. The universal stand works for most tablet designs, as long as they have an edge that will fit into the 10mm wide slots. The flexible but stable design can fold to a height that works for you so you can fully enjoy the Netflix experience without the pesky adjusting and readjusting... you're welcome.   5. Wi-Fi Enabled Video Doorbell Honestly, is there even any point getting out of bed unless you're receiving your last delivery from The Base Collective? You're only human. The WiFi Enabled Video Doorbell by Ring allows you to see, hear and speak to anyone at your door from your phone, laptop, or tablet - you barely even need to lift a finger if you're using the Tablift Tablet Stand mentioned above.

1. The Goop Lab With Gwyneth Paltrow Ever wondered the thought process behind some of Gwyneth Paltrow's suggestions on her lifestyle blog, Goop? Well, what began as a newsletter with recipes and fashion advice has since evolved into a multi-million-dollar wellness empire that spans books, a clothing line, beauty products, alternative medicine, health summits, a celebrity cruise, and now, a television show.  We get to go behind-the-scenes on psychedelics, energy work and other challenging wellness topics. However, as quoted from the website itself, "The series is designed to entertain and inform—not provide medical advice."   2. Offspring If you haven't already seen it, or perhaps if you saw it when it aired on television and your memory is a bit hazy, we highly recommend to watch Offspring. Nina Proudman, an obstetrician who lives in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy, struggles to deal with her work, eccentric family and her search for a soul mate. With great a great cast, relatable storylines, plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and all seven seasons available on Netflix, this is the perfect show to start bingeing.   3. Mindhunter If you're looking for something a little more darker, try Mindhunter. Based off a true story, it follows detectives Holden Ford and Bill Tench who who operate the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit and interview imprisoned serial killers to understand how they think, with the hope of applying this knowledge to solve ongoing cases.  Not going to lie - serial killers are so fascinating purely because no sane person can understand how or why they do what they do. Especially when they are portrayed as likeable or "normal", which is even scarier, and why Mindhunter is so addictive.

How to give your pooch the perfect bath.

by The Base Collective on Jan 29 2020
While dogs don’t require daily bathing as we do, they do need still need a good wash every now and then. How regular you should do it depends on several factors, such as the dog’s environment and type of coat. Generally, dogs only need a bath once a month, but your trusty vet can give you advice on how much bathing is appropriate for your individual dog.  Bathing your dog at home requires preparation, knowledge and risk of getting splashed! Here is a bit more about what you need to know.   Start off by brushing your dog before the bath. Matted hair holds water which could irritate your pet’s skin, and also helps to remove excess dirt and debris. Remember to talk to your pet in a calm and reassuring voice to make them feel at ease during the bathing process! Fill a sink, a tub of water, or simply use a bucket or cup, to wet your dog. Use lukewarm water only, as hot water can burn dogs more easily. It also prevents them from overheating and remain as comfortable as possible. Next, use a squirt of our Pet Wellness Magnesium Wash. It’s a mild shampoo that cleans the coat and removes unwanted smells without stripping away important oils and adds shine to your pet’s coat. Work into a gentle lather and massage all over your dog’s body from the neck down. Use a damp cloth to wash your dog’s face, as it gives you more control around avoiding the eyes and ears area. Rinse well and repeat several times. That’s it! Any soap left can irritate the skin when they’re dry. Use a towel to absorb the excess water then let your dog air dry, as using a hairdryer can be too hot and the noise may irritate them. Expect your dog to have a serious case of the crazies while they dry off! Reward your dog with praise, petting, treats, or play. Whatever makes your dog feel good! Sometimes it helps to treat yourself too.

How to have Happy Feet.

by The Base Collective on Dec 09 2019
Feet. You know those things at the end of your legs that you kind of tend to forget about except when using them as an excuse to buy some fabulous new shoes or they are aching after a day of high heel punishment? Well, today we have brought in an expert to talk about foot health and most importantly some tips and tricks for saving you from seriously sore feet after the socialising that December brings. So let us introduce you to Michelle from the Integrated Podiatry Clinic  who is seriously, what we like to call, a bit of a foot whisperer. And if you happen to be near South Yarra or Camberwell then we highly recommend you get yourself in for a Medical Pedicure with this miracle worker pronto!        Tell us about yourself (especially…why feet?!) I’ve been a podiatrist for the past 11 years and was initially drawn to this career through my love of sport. Being a competitive runner and netballer, I experienced many foot and ankle injuries, meaning I was able to appreciate firsthand just how our important feet are. I also watched my parents suffer with their own foot troubles (Mum with bunions and Dad with the consequences of being a professional runner and football umpire). They both regularly saw a podiatrist, so it was ingrained in me that foot care was a key component in overall good health and wellbeing.   Tell us about your practice I founded Integrated Podiatry Clinic 18 months ago with the vision of changing the often-negative perception of feet and podiatry within the community. It has been my mission to help people love their feet and provide education on the best ways to look after them. Over my career I’ve noticed people often neglect their feet and usually don’t give them a second thought until something goes wrong. Too often, I have heard my patients in their late 60s and 70s say they wish they had been more proactive taking care of their feet. My goal through my practice is to make preventative foot care more appealing and popular, especially amongst younger people.   What exactly does a Podiatrist do? Podiatrists assess, treat and prevent conditions of the lower leg, ankles and feet. We can help with the following things: General foot care (eg. ingrown toenails, callus, corns, tinea, warts) Sports and biomechanical issues (eg. plantar fasciitis, shin splints, heel pain, bunions, ankle sprains and tendonitis) Chronic health conditions (eg. Diabetes and Arthritis) Children’s development   How often should we see a podiatrist for a foot health check? This can vary for each individual and we suggest booking in for an initial consultation to work out what will be of benefit for you. Most people come for their routine treatment every 6 weeks, however if you are not experiencing problems a check-up every 6-12 months is recommended.   Any advice for dealing with tired and sore feet at the end of the day? We’re no stranger to the pain associated with a day in heels, so to help with your recovery here are some suggestions: 1. Stretching – just as it’s important to warm up, it’s equally important to cool down. A long day or night in heels means many of the leg muscles have been contracted for a long period of time. Performing the same stretches mentioned above following the event will be of benefit. 2. Get rolling – using a foam roller or spiky ball on your calf muscles and soles of your feet can help relax the muscles, breakdown any tight spots and increase circulation to the area. It may feel a little uncomfortable at first, however your feet and legs will thank you for it later. 3. Magnesium foot bath – after long time on your feet, a foot soak is a great excuse for some ‘me time’. We love using The Base Collective’s Magnesium Salt for our foot bath. If soaking isn’t your thing, they also have a Magnesium Oil which can be applied directly to the skin.   If you would like to put your feet in good hands then you can contact Michelle right here and follow her on Instagram over here!
